Aviation Security
Aviation security is getting more and more advanced with the technology of scanners and x-rays machines. People attempting to create cyber, criminal, or terrorism threats are having to get more creative. One of the biggest threats to aviation security is insider threats. An insider threat means that a person with the intent to seek malicious activity will try and commit harm to others or property within the airport or aircraft. These insiders are grouped in with all the members that work within the airport. Some examples might be but are not limited to are, TSA personnel, Air Traffic Controllers, restaurant workers, janitors, or the maintainers (Aviation Insider Threat Team, 2017).
Ways to Mitigate threats
TSA has a 20 layer security strategy used to help mitigate security threats. Five of these 20 strategies could be potentially used to prevent insider threats. These 5 strategies are intelligence, crew vetting, behavior detection, employee screening, and passengers (TSA, 2017).
Intelligence is a vital step in diffusing insider threat. TSA has an intelligence sector which main focus is gathering information and viewing patterns that could pose potential threat. Crew Vetting is also proactive because it is a process in which a security threat assessment is conducted on the airline employees and ensured through the intelligence database. Behavioral Detection is also big in suppressing threats. Often us as individual can tell when something is wrong with an individual or just different. Behavioral changes are a indication of potential suspicious activity. Although each individual is screened and assessed prior to being hired, that does not mean that individual cannot join a hostile organization afterwards, this is why random employee screening is also important. Lastly, passengers can also have a role in assisting with insider threat. As a passenger it is also a duty of yours to report and suspicious activity (TSA, 2017).
By inputting the use of these strategies can help alleviate or diffuse insider threats. Not one strategy can completely eradicate all threats but by stacking and utilizing as many strategies you can, the less likely a threat will occur.
